Daily Art Challenge Week Five Update

My work this week has started to get a bit more of a style to it. The vibrant colours make everything look pretty uniform. I still experimented with different mediums, but I can start repeatedly seeing stylistic choices in the shapes and textures I use.

Day 25 - 07/08/22

Ok, I think this is a little more me than the gouache painting yesterday. I created this piece using Faber Castell oil pastels, and I love it! I tried out many different techniques on scrap card first and then included some of them here. I love how I can use the pastels to make big, bold shapes in different colours and then add some detail by scratching it out and revealing some of the colours below. There’s a lot of layering in this piece! I have seen that’s how you’re supposed to do it, and I think it really works.

Day 26 - 08/08/22

I tried the same piece in two different mediums today and I love the concept but I don’t think either work completely. The (top) posca piece looks too simple, there’s a lack of delicate details that I can get with the skewer on the oil pastels (bottom). I love the colour range available in oil pastels but the finish isn’t as refined as I would like.

I could try this using the Ohuhu pens but I’m not sure how I would get the detail unless it was all black fine liner or fine posca. Maybe there’s another medium I’m yet to try that would work better.

Day 27 - 10/08/22

If only this were me today! It’s been another scorcher of a day today, so pool vibes have been on my mind. I took a pic and posted this to Instagram and then decided to add more detail with a white POSCA pen, and oh my! what a difference it’s made. I love how this looks with the white highlights!

Day 28 - 11/08/22

Today’s piece was inspired by an old #dtiys by @furrylittlepeach I have been binge-watching her content and have been inspired to create something cute and simple and colourful. I quite like the outcome.

This is also my first bit of colour in the new A6 sketchbook. I was going to try and stick to doing just pencil and pen in this little book, but I need that colour in my life, and I don’t feel I should be restricting myself from trying things at this point in my journey. So I’m glad I changed it up.

Day 29 - 12/08/22

Day 29 of my daily art challenge. A little messier than I’d like, but it’s so fricken hot my hand was sweating and shaking 🥵 This was another piece created using Ohuhu pens and I feel like I’m really starting to get the hang of using these markers.

Day 30 - 13/08/22

Thirty days of daily drawing. I’m really not very good at people yet. That poor girl has no chin, no ass and an odd-shaped head and the background didn’t really make up for it. For the second piece, I went simple, and I think I made up for it a bit 😂 Again these pieces were created using Ohuhu markers and a black fine liner pen.

Hi, I’m Steph Welch. When I’m not creating, you’ll find me walking in the Sussex countryside or binge-watching crime dramas.
